I recently attended a career fair in Cromwell, CT. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel this would be my second time attending this particular job fair before I resorted to a billboard. Although I was happy for the unemployed people like myself that this event was presented to, this time I attended I was aggravated. It was completely over crowded and more like a “Career Circus”! With the unemployment rate the way it is I assumed there would be a multitude of people, however the room they held it in was just too small. People were standing in long lines of standing room only that were out of the doors, pushing and shoving to get through the lines, you couldn’t hear yourself think let alone talk to people about possibly obtaining employment. Then to make matters worse, although well intended, Govenor Jodi Rell made an appearance and caused a whole different frenzy chock-full of reporters and an entourage. So now not only were the people looking for employment distracted but some of the people representing the companies became somewhat star struck as if she were a celebrity, I found that quite comical myself. Another thing about the job fair was that the companies there had people representing them that had no power to even hire you, they were just there to pass out the applications, collect them, bring them back to the office and pass them on to HR……..been there done that to no avail. There also was an abundance of entry level jobs and not enough managerial positions if any at all. What I did like though was the companies that were there to show you how you could save money on your utilities, that was very informative and I give Larry McHugh of the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce who organized the career fair sincere thanks for presenting the opportunity.
